H5N1 proposals welcome

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 6th Apr 2006

Commenting on the measures announced by Scotland's Environment and Rural Development Minister, Ross Finnie MSP, Liberal Democrat shadow Environment, Food and Rural Affairs secretary, Chris Huhne MP, said:

"The arrival of avian flu was only a matter of time given its spread westwards across Europe, and it is right that it should trigger precautions but not panic.

"Ross Finnie has announced a sensible set of proposals to deal with the matter and protect poultry from infection by wild birds, and we should continue to monitor the situation closely on both sides of the border".
