Cameron's new car is worse than all Britain's top ten cars

12.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 24th Apr 2006

Commenting on David Cameron's choice of a new 3.5 litre hybrid Lexus 4 x 4 as his official car, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"Not only does David Cameron's new car emit nearly double the Toyota Prius, which is perfectly serviceable for a senior politician, but it also emits more per kilometre than every single one of the Britain's top selling ten cars.

"Only the Tories could present this choice of car as environmentally friendly. Far from voting blue and going green, David Cameron deserves to go red with embarrassment.

"The Tories are going backwards as David Cameron is proving to be less green than Michael Howard, the previous Tory leader, who drives a Prius as I do. The notion that the Prius is too small for a senior politician is nonsense as Mr Howard has shown.

"I drove Sir Menzies Campbell around my constituency in my Prius this morning, and if it is good enough for Sir Menzies and indeed for Mr Howard it ought to be good enough for Mr Cameron".
