GM MUST BE PUT ON HOLD UNTIL WE KNOW IT IS SAFE - HUHNE

1.15.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 20th Jul 2006

Commenting on the Government's announcement of a new consultation on the growing of genetically modified crops, Chris Huhne MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DEFRA Secretary said:

"This is another step in the Government's creep towards introducing unpopular GM crops into the UK.

"Commercial GM crops must be put on hold until we know they are safe for the environment and human health.

"Communities should have the right to create GM-free zones and biotechnology companies must stand ready to compensate non-GM farmers whose crops are contaminated."
