Research is needed into renewable forms of energy to cut carbon emissions.

Responding to Lord Rees' call for a publicly funded international research programme to develop cleaner renewable forms of energy, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"Lord Rees is right. We have maybe 10 or 15 years to cut our carbon emissions dramatically, or face potentially runaway global warming.

"A priority research program would help the switch from fossil fuels for use in both heating and motion.

"The G8 summit in St Petersburg once again addressed the urgent issues at the expense of the most important threat to our civilisation."
