PROGRESS WELCOME BUT BIG CORPORATIONS STILL GETTING OFF LIGHTLY - HUHNE

12.01.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 6th Oct 2006

The Local Government Association is expected to release figures showing that a high number of fines have been imposed on polluters since the introduction of new laws aimed at protecting the environment.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"This is welcome evidence that councils are beginning to tackle low-level green offences.

"However, some big corporate offenders are still getting off far too lightly with costly and damaging dumping of waste and toxins.

"Environmental crime needs to be tackled far more thoroughly by both local authorities and government bodies like the Environment Agency."
