REDUCED LEAKS AND METERING NEEDED TO SAFEGUARD WATER SUPPLY - HUHNE

1.28.14pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 30th Jan 2007

Commenting on the launch on the Government's draft proposals for the introduction of water metering in areas of severe shortage, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"As climate change begins to cause severe droughts, we must make sure that we use our water recourses more effectively. After nine years this Government has failed to produce a serious joined-up and sustainable strategy for the management of resources.

"There must also be increased powers to tackle water companies who make large profits but fail to reduce leaks. These companies must do more to modernise the network and reduce waste.

"Sustainability can be achieved, in part, through metering, which is proven to reduce usage and bills. Water metering must be introduced in areas where there is high use, if the UK's water shortages are to be overcome.

"People must be encouraged to use water more prudently if we are to meet this challenge in the future.

"Recycling 'grey water' can play a role, but will not be enough in themselves. The fundamental question is why more and more water is being used, particularly in the South East."
