Defra must also give greater information to local farmers on what they can and cannot do

Commenting on today's developments in the foot and mouth outbreak, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defra Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"The latest confirmed case is obviously worrying news. It is imperative that the source of this disease is discovered as soon as possible.

"Ministers must explain why the Health and Safety Executive report has been unexpectedly delayed. I hope no ministerial editing of its conclusions takes place.

"Much more effort must be made to ensure footpaths are closed to limit the possibility of any further spread.

"Defra must also give greater information to local farmers on what they can and cannot do. For example, there has been no direction on the use of combine harvesters, despite weather which is perfect for harvesting."
